Galax City Overview
Galax Police Department
The Galax Police Department provides law enforcement for this small independent city in Southwest Virginia. The department maintains arrest records, booking records, and incident reports for all activity within city limits. For local record requests or questions about a specific case, the Police Department is your starting point.
Galax sits at the border of Carroll and Grayson counties but operates independently from both. Criminal cases from within Galax city limits go through Galax's own Circuit Court and General District Court. Cases from either neighboring county go through those county courts. When using the online search at vacourts.gov, make sure you are looking at Galax specifically, not Carroll or Grayson counties.

How to Search Galax Arrest Records
Use vacourts.gov for free online case lookups. Enter a name or case number to find records from Galax's Circuit Court and General District Court. The tool shows charges, hearing dates, and outcomes. No fee. No account required.
Galax has its own Circuit Court and General District Court. The Circuit Court handles felony cases, higher civil matters, and appeals. The General District Court handles misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and preliminary felony hearings. All criminal cases from within city limits go through these city courts, not Carroll or Grayson County courts.
For a statewide certified criminal history, use the Virginia State Police CARE system. Form SP-167 covers personal and authorized third-party checks at $15 with a notarized signature. Employers use form SP-230 for conviction-only records at $29. Both forms are at vsp.virginia.gov. Mail with payment to VSP in Richmond. Allow about 15 business days for the record to come back.
For state prison inmates, use the VADOC Offender Locator. For local jail inquiries in Galax, call the Police Department. VADOC only covers state correctional facilities.
Note: Sealed records, expunged files, juvenile cases, and some protective order matters are not available online. Contact the court clerk if a specific record is missing.
Galax Court Records
Galax's Circuit Court handles all felony criminal cases for the city, civil cases above the lower court threshold, and appeals from the General District Court. The clerk's office keeps official files and provides certified copies for a fee. Public access terminals at the courthouse let you search at no charge during business hours.
The General District Court handles misdemeanor cases, traffic violations, and preliminary felony hearings. Both courts are searchable through the statewide case information system online. For physical copies or file reviews, visit the appropriate clerk's office with photo ID. Under § 19.2-389 of the Code of Virginia, the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange is the statewide repository for criminal history records.
FOIA and Public Access
Virginia FOIA at § 2.2-3704 gives you the right to request government records. Records are presumed open unless an exemption applies. You do not need to say why you want them. Arrest names and charges are public. Active investigations and juvenile records are the main exceptions. For help, contact the Virginia FOIA Advisory Council at (804) 698-1810.
Expungement of Galax Arrest Records
Under § 19.2-392.2, you may petition Galax's Circuit Court for expungement of an arrest record if you were acquitted, if the charge was dismissed or nolle prosequi, or if you were arrested but never charged and the record causes harm. Absolute pardon recipients may also qualify.
Virginia generally does not allow expungement of convictions. Starting July 2025, certain convictions may be eligible for automatic sealing under new state law after waiting periods. To file in Galax, petition the Circuit Court here, submit fingerprints through VSP, and serve the Commonwealth's Attorney. Filing fees apply. A hearing may occur if the Commonwealth's Attorney objects.
