Falls Church Arrest Records Search
Falls Church arrest records are maintained by the Falls Church Police Department and the city's own Circuit Court, as Falls Church is one of Virginia's smallest independent cities with its own court system separate from Fairfax and Arlington counties. You can search criminal cases for free through the Virginia Courts Case Information System, or call the Police Department at (703) 241-5050 for local record requests.
Falls Church City Overview
Falls Church Police Department
The Falls Church Police Department provides law enforcement for one of Virginia's smallest independent cities. Despite its small size, Falls Church operates its own full police department and maintains arrest records, booking records, and incident reports for all law enforcement activity within city limits. The department handles public records requests and can direct you to the right resources for your specific need.
Falls Church is an independent city completely surrounded by Fairfax and Arlington counties but legally separate from both. Criminal cases from within Falls Church city limits go through Falls Church's own courts, not those of either neighboring county. This is an important distinction: looking in Fairfax County or Arlington County records will not show you Falls Church cases. The online case search at vacourts.gov covers all Virginia courts, so search by name across all jurisdictions if you are not sure where a case was filed.

How to Search Falls Church Arrest Records
Start at vacourts.gov for free online searches. Search by name or case number to find Falls Church Circuit Court and General District Court records. The system shows charges, hearing dates, and outcomes. No fee. No account required.
Falls Church has its own Circuit Court and General District Court. The Circuit Court handles felony cases, civil cases above the lower court limit, and appeals. The General District Court handles misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and preliminary felony hearings. All criminal cases from within Falls Church city limits run through these city courts only.
For a statewide certified criminal history, go through the Virginia State Police CARE system. Form SP-167 covers personal and authorized third-party checks at $15. A notarized signature is required. Employers use form SP-230 for conviction-only records at $29. Both forms are at vsp.virginia.gov. Mail with payment to VSP in Richmond. Allow about 15 business days for processing.
To find someone in a state correctional facility, use the VADOC Offender Locator. For local jail inquiries, call the Falls Church Police Department. VADOC only shows state prison inmates, not local detainees.
Note: Sealed records, expunged files, juvenile cases, and some protective order matters are excluded from online searches. Contact the court clerk if a record you expect to find is not showing up.
Falls Church Court Records
The Falls Church Circuit Court handles felony criminal cases for the city, higher civil cases, and appeals from the General District Court. The clerk's office keeps official case files and provides certified copies for a fee. Public access terminals are available at the courthouse during business hours for free searches.
The General District Court handles misdemeanor cases, traffic violations, and felony preliminary hearings. Both courts are searchable through the Virginia Courts Case Information System. For physical file reviews or certified copies, visit the clerk's office with photo ID. Under § 19.2-389 of the Code of Virginia, the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange maintains the statewide criminal history repository.
FOIA and Public Access
Virginia FOIA at § 2.2-3704 gives the public the right to request government records. Records are presumed open unless an exemption applies. You do not need to explain why you want them. Arrest names and charges are public. Active investigations and juvenile records are the main exceptions. For help navigating a request or appealing a denial, contact the Virginia FOIA Advisory Council at (804) 698-1810.
Expungement of Falls Church Arrest Records
Under § 19.2-392.2, you may petition the Falls Church Circuit Court for expungement of an arrest record if you were acquitted, if the charge was dismissed or nolle prosequi, or if you were arrested but never charged and the record causes harm. Absolute pardon recipients may also be eligible.
Virginia does not allow expungement of convictions as a general rule. Starting July 2025, new state law may allow certain convictions to be sealed automatically after waiting periods. To file in Falls Church, petition the Circuit Court here, submit fingerprints through VSP, and serve the Commonwealth's Attorney. Filing fees apply. A hearing may follow if the Commonwealth's Attorney objects.
